imagesFollowing the recent redesign of its home page, Yahoo is now opening the gates to all developers. Akin to what Apple does with third party applications, Yahoo is set to mimic its business model and potentially attract billions of dollars in revenues.

If you own a smart phone then you are well aware of how appealing these applications are. Currently Yahoo provides approximately 400 already created third party apps for its 330 million unique visitors per month. Yahoo! has announced that developers will be able to build applications for its home page and sell those apps similarly to how the applications store for Apple functions.

Developers will be able to build apps and drive traffic to any site increasing awareness while capturing new users. In addition the third party app will allow ad displays as an additional monetization opportunity.

The homepage apps can be built with Yahoo! Application Platform (YAP), which allows you to build and distribute an app to any Yahoo user.
